DJ Sumbody's family has broken its silence after a report linked the late musician's murder to criminal activities, dismissing claims that he was involved in drug dealing. While police arrested a businessman believed to have masterminded DJ Sumbody’s assassination, they have yet to confirm the motive.
DJ Sumbody, born Oupa Sefoka, was gunned down in Woodmead, Johannesburg, on 20 November 2022. A report by Sunday World suggested that his murder might be linked to a drug cargo that went missing from police custody in Durban. In light of the publication, DJ Sumbody’s family broke its silence on reports linking the late producer and business owner to criminal activities.

On Wednesday, 30 July 2025, SABC News shared a statement from DJ Sumbody’s family addressing the report that he was involved in crime, specifically drug dealing. In the video, a family spokesperson denied reports that DJ Sumbody was involved in crime, specifically drug dealing.

Chad Thomas, the Sefoka family spokesperson, suggested that the report was part of a smear campaign against DJ Sumbody being orchestrated by syndicates to shift focus away from the real criminals.
“We found out over the weekend that the fightback is beginning. These syndicates are very connected. We’ve noticed that there’s been speculative reports. There have been demeaning reports trying to indicate that DJ Sumbody may be connected with some or other underworld activity and of course we dismiss it,” the spokesperson said.
Family denies DJ Sumbody was involved in crime
Thomas went on to defend DJ Sumbody’s legacy, describing him as a philanthropist who had cared deeply about others.

“We dismiss this categorically, out of hand. DJ Sumbody was a person that set up a foundation, and he was invested in his community. In developing these communities. He was a family-oriented man,” Chad Thomas added.
The family spokesperson predicted that more smear campaigns against DJ Sumbody would follow, especially given what General Nhlanhla Nkhwanazi had said in his explosive press briefing.
“So, you’re going to see a lot of smear campaigns coming out and not just affecting this particular case, but all the cases related to what General Mkhwanazi has identified,” the spokesperson concluded.
