Tyla's global reign continues with her latest nominations at the MTV Video Music Awards 2025.

The South African pop Princess has been recognised under two categories, Best Choreography and Best Afrobeats. Tyla faces stiff competition again this year, but her fans are almost certain that she will come out on top.

After she won her first VMA in 2024, under the Best Afrobeats Award, Tyla said the win was bittersweet because she does not like the tendency that most international award ceremonies have of grouping African artists under Afrobeats.

Nandi Madida shares adorable throwback video of her 1st TV presenting gig: "There are no shortcuts"

"The global impact that 'Water' has had on the world just proves that African music can be pop music too. This is just so special, but also bittersweet because, I know there's a tendency to group all African artists under Afrobeats. It's a thing, and even though Afrobeats has run things and has opened so many doors for us, African music is so diverse. It's more than just Afrobeats."

Tyla recently graced the cover of Variety, where she revealed that she was pressured to make music she didn’t connect with. She said that after she got signed, she was told to make bubblegum pop music.

“[Those songs] didn’t feel like me at all. I remember being in my hotel room, and my managers were calling me, ‘Come down, we need to cut the song.’ I was crying and thinking, ‘This is not what I want. I didn’t get signed to do this.’ They had to [coax] me out of that room. But I think that through doing that, I realised how much more I love African music. It made me more persistent in keeping my ideas.”

Tyla faces Water lawsuit

In a previous report from Briefly News, Tyla is reportedly at the centre of a legal battle with the producers behind her breakout song, Water.

Two songwriters and producers alleged they were not credited in the song and missed out on receiving their royalties. They have since pursued legal action after years of failed attempts to settle the matter out of court.
