What does it really cost to charge your phone?
A South African man intrigued people with his calculations of how much people could save when charging their cellphones. His TikTok post drew in many questions about the device some people cannot live without.
Wes Reddy, who often shares how much people can save on appliances and devices, uploaded a video on his account on 4 June noting that a standard fast charger is 30W and takes approximately one hour to fully charge a cellphone.

"If you charge every day at 30W for one hour, and you multiply that by 30 days in a month, you're using about 0.9kWh. If you multiply that by R4 per kWh, the cost for the entire month is R3.60.
"Even if you play with the numbers a bit, it's going to be under R5."
Wes concluded that if people still want to save a bit more, they can charge their cellphones in their vehicles or use a small solar panel.

A few local members of the online community rushed to Wes' comment section to express their thoughts about the costs. Some also wanted to know how much it would cost them to use other electronics and electrical appliances.
@1indianoue asked with a laugh:
"Does it count if I charge at my work office for free?"
Wes responded to the TikTok user:
"Well, they’re going to knock you for the R3.60 per month if they find out, and they could also backdate it. That’s risky."
@akesthe1 asked the content creator in the comment section:
"Does it only draw power if I put my phone on charge? What about if I leave it plugged in?"
Wes told the person:
"I know many people say to unplug it, but it draws almost nothing. I keep them plugged in."
Given the economic state of the country, @tillalabuskaknie shared:
"At least something that's still affordable."
An intrigued @jenniferwilliams_sa wondered in the comments:
"Where did you get that small solar panel charger?"
@meshachreddy853, who seemed to be appreciative, added:
"Thanks for all the tips. I'm going to be rich soon."
