An inspiring story of hope highlighted the determination and perseverance of a graduate who refused to give up on his dreams.

The emotional clip, shared on TikTok by @3steps_sa, received praise and admiration from many social media users.

The video features the man, who is also an entrepreneur, proudly walking on the University of Johannesburg campus with his degree in hand. While walking and looking into the camera, he called his degree a piece of paper he paid a lot of money for. He then followed the video with another clip, in which he explained his journey. He graduated while owing R40,000, but did not get his degree due to his outstanding fees.

The man goes from debt to a degree holder

He landed a temporary teaching job, and when a permanent post became available, he applied, aced the interview and was offered the position. When the Department of Education, however, requested his qualifications, they discovered that he was still in debt at UJ.

He then decided to take the R38,000 he had saved from his clothing business to buy a car in December and pay off the university debt. He was then able to finally collect his degree.
