An American man in Katy, Texas, in the United States, took a trip to a casual fine-dining restaurant serving South African cuisine. However, what the man ordered from the menu left many South Africans questioning the food on offer.

On 11 August, 2025, the man, whose name is Kent, went to Astor's Table restaurant and ordered a Windhoek beer, which he mistakenly called "a true South African beer."

The clip, which he posted on his TikTok account, cut to Kent asking his waitress:

"Do you have something called pap? I was told it's not South African if you don't have pap."

Kent didn't get pap, but got goat curry, white rice, and sweet plantain, which another waiter recommended.

Mzansi questions the menu

Thousands of social media users flooded the comment section with confusion after seeing what was on Astor's Table's menu. Many people thought that the items were not authentic South African dishes.

@tashiaj asked the public:

"Who in South Africa eats goat curry or sweet plantain? I'm intrigued to know."

@ninja_taz88 said to Kent:

"They lied to you, sir. Windhoek is from Namibia, and goat curry is sadly not South African. Recommendation would be Castle beer, bobotie, bunny chow, gatsby, kota, pap en sous, koeksisters, rusks and milk tart/melktert."

@soglenhali shared in the comments:

"You need to find some South Africans in your city and get an invite to a braai with boerewors, pap, bobotie, biltong, and sosaties."

@raul_mseletshe gave their opinion on the matter:

"Goat curry and plantain sounds Jamaican to me. Goats are for cultural functions. I wouldn't say it's a dish."

@boitshepo_moloto stated with a laugh:

"Mr Kent, I'm sorry they lied to you again. Kudos for finding the right music, though."

@sikomode1993 added in the comment section:

"At this point, I think you might need to come to South Africa."
