Johannesburg Metro Police Department Officer Accused of Roadblock Assault

MIDRAND, GAUTENG —A Pretoria man is taking legal action against a member of the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) who reportedly assaulted him in front of his children.

In a video of the incident that happened in July 2025, the metro police officer is seen arguing with the motorist, Oniel Rajnund. The cop demands that the man get out of the car to be breathalysed during a roadblock.

He got out of the car and took the test, which showed that he did not drink any alcohol. The officer forced him out of the car, and he started assaulting him.

According to eNCA, Rajnund said that his children were in the car and witnessed their father's assault. One of his children tried to help him, and the officers warned him to stay away.

Rajnund allegedly victimised at the police station

When Rajnund tried to report the incident at the Midrand Police Station, he said the police refused to take his statement. When he tried to record them, the officer pulled him out of the station after grabbing his phone and throwing it on the floor.

The JMPD's spokesperson, Xolani Fihla, said the victim must open a case against the officers and declined to comment. The South African Police Service also urged him to open a case.

Cases where officers assaulted citizens

A police officer from Tsakane, Ekurhuleni, slapped a man who was questioning her complacency in a video that went viral on 2 November 2024. The South African Police Service confirmed that an investigation was underway.

The police are also investigating an incident where a Rustenburg, North West, officer assaulted a member of the public in a video that went viral in December. The incident happened at the Rusenburg Police Station, and officers restrained the officer during the assault.

South Africans commenting on the incident discussed the officers and the victim's conduct.

Mphoza Captain Nakedi said:

"Officers must respect the law. Night roadblocks are not to be trusted."

Harlene Rampersad said:

"We are not safe on the road because some officers are bullies, and if we don't record them, there is no case."

Innocent Fono said:

"I don't feel safe around police. Whenever I am driving past them, I feel like I am passing mafias or criminals."

Free State officers arrested for assault

In a related article, Briefly News reported that two officers from the South African Police Service in Heidedal, Free State, were arrested. They reportedly assaulted a complainant at the police station.

A video of the incident went viral, and the video shows the officers assaulting her. South Africans slammed them.

10 Police officers arrested in Ekurhuleni for theft and corruption

Meanwhile, Briefly News previously reported that South Africans celebrated the arrest of 10 Metro Police Officers and South African Police Service officers in Ekurhuleni, Gauteng, on 4 August 2025. According to SABC News, the incident happened during a raid the Tactical Response Team conducted.

They were arrested in Edenvale and charged with theft and corruption. Six Ekurhuleni Metro Police officers and four Tsakane Police Station officers were arrested.

The officers who were arrested allegedly raided a shop and did not book the items they confiscated. The police also reportedly confiscated R35,000 in cash, which the police found in their possession.

A member of the South African Police Service from Gauteng was arrested on the N1 South outside of Polokwane on 19 March. The constable was found with R85,000 worth of nyaope while driving a suspected stolen vehicle. He was charged with dealing in drugs and possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle.
