DURBAN, KWAZULU-NATAL —The Durban University of Technology confirmed that one of its students died after falling to his death on 19 August 2025 in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.

The university posted the announcement on its Facebook page and said that the South African Police Service is investigating the incident. KZN VIP Protection Services spokesperson Gareth Naidoo said that the student fell to his death, and the circumstances leading to the death are under investigation.

The university said that it made counselling support available to staff and students. The university also said that the student's name will be released once the family is notified.

Students who died on campus

A third-year Tshwane University of Technology student was allegedly stabbed to death by her boyfriend, and her body was discovered on 3 February 2023. The 21-year-old student was found with multiple stab wounds on her neck. She was last seen alive having drinks with her ex-boyfriend.

A Walter Sisulu University student in Mthatha, Eastern Cape, was killed and two others were injured during a shooting at a protest on 15 April 2025. The students protested against the campus manager's alleged mistreatment. They demanded that he be removed and accused him of shooting another student three weeks prior.

The slain student was remembered for his kindness and dedication. The student's classmate remembered him as a calm person who did not like chaos.
