MKHUHLU, MPUMALANGA — Three people died in Mkhuhlu, Mpumalanga, on 22 August 2025 after unknown gunmen opened fire on their car and drowned them in a hail of bullets. One victim died later in the hospital.

According to SABC News, the victims were travelling in a black Mercedes-Benz when gunmen ambushed them using high-calibre firearms. Two of the victims died on the scene. The third was rushed to the hospital, where he died from his wounds.

The South African Police Service launched a manhunt for the suspects, and the victims have not been identified. The police also found a lot of cartridges on the scene and are trying to establish who the owner of the vehicle was, as it has a Gauteng number plate.

Recent violent shootings

On 14 June 2025, two suspects were arrested in the North West after they allegedly shot and killed an elderly couple in a road rage incident. The two suspects reportedly shot and killed the couple at a shopping centre in Rustenburg.

A Limpopo motorist was shot and killed on the N1 outside Makhado on 17 August 2025. The victim was traveling on the N1 road when he had a breakdown near the Rondebosch plot. Another motorist stopped and allegedly opened fire, killing him.
