CAPE TOWN, WESTERN CAPE — South African Police Service's KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has had to deal with rising popularity following the explosive allegations he made in a press briefing on 6 July 2025.

Mkhwanazi spoke on the sidelines of the 27th Interpol African regional conference in Cape Town, Western Cape, on 27 August. According to eNCA, Mkhwanazi said that his privacy has been compromised because wherever he walks around, there are people who recognise and greet him on the street. He said that he is not used to the popularity and does not enjoy it.

Mkhwanazi also said that he was proud of the police officers in KwaZulu-Natal who, daily, are making arrests and recovering firearms. He also lauded their efforts, which resulted in successful prosecutions of criminals.

What you need to know about Mkhwanazi

Mkhwanazi's 6 July press conference set off a chain of events which included suspensions and the establishment of two separate bodies to investigate the extent of the infiltration of the country's criminal justice system.

Mkhwanazi alleged that Senzo Mchunu and Deputy National Police Commissioner General Shadrack Sibiya were part of a drug syndicate that infiltrated the country's justice system. He also alleged that Mchunu had ties to businessmen Cat Matlala and Brown Mogotsi, who he alleges had infiltrated the police's ranks.

Mchunu initially denied the allegations but later confessed to knowing Mogotsi, calling him a comrade. President Cyril Ramaphosa placed him on special leave and established the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry to probe Mkhwanazi's allegations.

Mkhwanazi turns down a donation

'In a related article, Briefly News reported that Mkhwanazi graciously turned down the R44,000 donation that South Africans made to him. South Africans wanted to gift him a cow for the allegations he made.

Mkhwanazi proposed that he donation be used to fund the education of the children of police officers who died in the line of duty. South Africans agreed with him.
