Former Kaizer Chiefs head coach Cavin Johnson has explained why he wouldn't have signed Sipho Mbule for the Glamour Boys this season.

Mbule was confirmed as Orlando Pirates first summer signing after the appointment of Abdeslam Ouaddou as Jose Riveiro's replacement.

The South African midfielder spent last season on loan at Sekhukhune United and was tipped to join Kaizer Chiefs at the end of his contract with Mamelodi Sundowns this summer.

Despite serious links with the Glamour Boys, the former SuperSport United midfielder opted to join Amakhosi's city rivals on a free transfer and has featured in their two pre-season games against Bolton Wanderers and Pafos FC in Spain.

Johnson: I wouldn't have signed Mbule for Kaizer Chiefs

In an interview with KickOff, Johnson opened up on the reason he wouldn't consider bringing in Mbule as a new signing for Kaizer Chiefs if he's the coach of the club.

The South African coach claimed the off-field issues the Bafana Bafana midfielder has been facing could've influenced his decision not the sign him for Amakhosi.

“Sipho Mbule just needs to make sure he stays out of trouble with the club, considering his past,” Johnson told KickOff.
“He should focus on having a strong pre-season, avoid distractions on social media, and concentrate fully on his game. He’s a talented player.”
“When I was at Chiefs, there were concerns about his behaviour, so I wouldn’t have signed him at that time,” the 66-year-old coach added.
“But now that he’s changed his mindset and Orlando Pirates have given him a chance, I sincerely wish him all the best.”

He was rated as one of best midfielders in the Premier Soccer League last season.
