The late former Orlando Pirates striker, Tendai Ndoro, was found dead in his Sandton apartment on Monday, 18 August. A postmortem is being carried out to determine the cause of death.

Ndoro was one of Zimbabwe’s most popular footballers, representing the Warriors between 2013 and 2017.

According to Zimbabwe’s daily newspaper H-Metro, Ndoro died a bitter and lonely man. A viral clip of him, which surfaced on Tuesday, 19 August, showed him speaking about his ex-wife, Thando Maseko.

In the days leading up to his death, Ndoro reportedly confided in close friends that he felt abandoned by both family and friends, particularly after his divorce.

One of the messages sent to H-Metro allegedly read:

“Since I moved into the new apartment in Sandton, I never had visitors. The divorce made me stay away from a lot of things. I was rebuilding, taking it slow but surely.”

In another message, he wrote:

“Pain has built me a lot. I fought a silent battle alone, with no support from family and friends.”

Ndoro had complained of nosebleeds to friends

At the time of his death, Ndoro was living at the upmarket Barlouw Park Lifestyle Estate in Sandton. A close friend revealed that they had planned to travel to Pretoria together to renew their driver’s licences, but Ndoro had complained of nosebleeds and headaches. That was the last time they spoke.

After a week of silence, his friends grew worried. With the caretaker’s help, they entered his apartment and discovered his lifeless body.

Emotional video on Tiktok of moves fans

Days before his passing, Ndoro posted a video on TikTok that left fans in tears. In the clip, he appeared emotional while listening to a love song by Zimbabwean musician Jah Prayzah, which speaks of longing for a well-mannered partner. The timing was haunting, as just a day later, a clip of him discussing his ex-wife began trending online.

His final TikTok post, coupled with the revelations from his last text messages, paints a heartbreaking picture of a man who died lonely and broken.

“I fought a silent battle alone,” Ndoro wrote, reflecting the pain of his final moments.

Ndoro had been battling health challenges in recent years. He was diagnosed with diabetes in 2021, which affected his eyesight and eventually forced him to retire from football in 2020.

In May, reports claimed he had been hospitalised in Durban with complications linked to diabetes. However, Ndoro released a video message denying the speculation:

“Hello guys, I’m okay. I’m in the hospital, undergoing treatment for a tumour that developed under my armpit. It’s not diabetes. I’m sick, yes, but it’s not that serious.”

Footballer collapses and dies on the pitch

Briefly News previously reported that a football player in Verulam, north of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal, collapsed and died on the pitch on Saturday, 16 August, during a league match at the Verulam Recreational Grounds on Todd Street.

He was with his teammates when he suddenly fell ill and died on the spot.
